Aizawl, Jan 12: Mizoram has taken a significant step to address border disputes by establishing a boundary committee, in line with the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party’s first 100 days of governance initiatives.

The committee, chaired by Home Minister K. Sapdanga, will specifically focus on issues related to the Assam-Mizoram border.

The newly formed boundary committee comprises key figures such as Vice Chairman Lalthansanga, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Member Secretary H. Lalengmawia, Home Secretary. Additional members include Adviser to CM (Political) Lalmuanpuia Punte, Chief Secretary, DGP Govt. T Romana College Assistant Professor Joseph K Lalfakzuala, political party representatives (MNE, INC, BJP, AAP, and ZPM), NGO representatives (NGOCC, CYMA, MUP, MHI., MZP, and MSU), and a representative from JAC on Inner Line Forest Reserved Demand, Mizoram.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma is expected to engage in discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later this month to address border issues during the North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session in Shillong on January 19.

This session, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, provides an opportunity to tackle the longstanding disputes and foster resolution.

The Mizoram-Assam border, spanning 164.6 km, has been a source of contention, reaching a critical point in July 2021 when the police forces of both states exchanged gunfire, resulting in the tragic deaths of six policemen and a civilian from Assam.

The establishment of the boundary committee and upcoming discussions signal a proactive approach to finding lasting solutions to these complex border issues.
