Guwahati, Jan 12: In the enchanting landscapes of Assam’s Dima Hasao district, a heightened sense of anticipation pervades the political atmosphere as the counting of votes for the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections unfolds.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured a significant victory in the Haflong seat, setting a positive tone for the party in this pivotal local governance body.

This election, marking the 13th iteration for the council, witnessed polling officials diligently fulfilling their responsibilities at their respective stations during the voting on January 8.

Commencing at 8 AM, the vote counting process is currently underway, with the BJP securing at least 10 seats, including the crucial Haflong constituency. Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa confidently stated that the BJP is poised to secure victory in at least 22 seats in the current election.

The election for the 13th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council unfolded on Monday, with polling officials deployed well in advance to oversee the proceedings. The council comprises 22 constituencies under Dima Hasao, and six candidates from as many constituencies secured uncontested wins.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma actively campaigned in the region, making promises to enhance health facilities, improve connectivity, and transform the hill district into a thriving tourist destination.

He emphasized the government’s dedication to restoring connectivity post-landslide in 2022 and addressing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, he pledged financial assistance for higher education and support for women under the Orunodoi scheme.

The Assam State Election Commission demonstrated meticulous planning by categorizing 100 out of the 280 polling stations as ‘sensitive’ and 27 as ‘very sensitive.’

This classification underlines the commitment to robust security measures, ensuring a fair and peaceful election process.

As the counting progresses, all eyes are fixed on Dima Hasao, where the results will play a decisive role in shaping the future governance and developmental trajectory of this autonomous region nestled in the heart of Assam.
