Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: India successfully conducted a flight test of the new generation AKASH missile on Friday at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, according to officials.

The test, carried out by DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization), targeted a high-speed unmanned aerial target at very low altitude.

The weapon system, comprising the missile with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and Command, Control & Communication system, successfully intercepted and destroyed the target.

The test validated the complete system’s functionality, and its performance was verified through data captured by various radars, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur.

Senior officials from DRDO, Indian Air Force (IAF), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) witnessed the flight test.

The AKASH-NG system, known for its capability to intercept high-speed, agile aerial threats, demonstrated its effectiveness, paving the way for user trials.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, IAF, PSUs, and the industry for the successful flight test, emphasizing that the system’s development enhances the country’s air defense capabilities.

Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, also extended congratulations to the teams involved in the test, highlighting the achievement’s significance in bolstering India’s defense capabilities.
