Aizawl, Jan 17: The lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram K. Vanlalvena on Wednesday expressed strong opposition to the recent proposal of the centre to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border.

Vanlalvena, former president of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) while being felicitated by the apex Mizo student organisation, said that he will raise the issue of the proposal to terminate FMR and border fencing in the coming session of the Parliament.

“While we have been strongly objecting to the division of the ethnic Mizo people by the British colonial government by demarcating an international border between Mizoram and Chin state (Myanmar), we can never accept doing away with the FMR,” he said.

He also said that he completely rejected the proposal to fence the Indo-Myanmar border in the Mizoram sector.

“If the Indian government wants to fence the borders, let it fence the border between India and Pakistan as well as India and China,” he said, adding that the proposal of the centre would be opposed to the end.

Vanlalvena was felicitated by the MZP for raising his voice several times in the Parliament to safeguard the people and Mizoram.
