Kohima, Dec 06: The Nagaland Mon district police on Monday filed suo moto FIR against 21 paramilitary forces, calling the killings “murder” by the forces. The cops have said that the unit didn’t ask for a police guide for operations and the “intention was to murder”.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will make a visit to the Mon district on Monday, two days after 13 civilians were shot dead by security forces after an operation went awry.

The Nagaland government on Sunday also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

At least 13 civilians and an Assam Rifles trooper were killed and 14 others injured in a series of violent clashes in Nagaland’s Mon district after an army operation to target Naga insurgents went wrong late on Saturday, officials said.

The leaders of various Naga organizations, including Konyak Hoho and Oting Village Students’ Union (OVSU), claimed that eight coal miners were returning from the Tiru coal mining area in a pick-up van when they were targeted.

Health and Family Welfare Minister S Pangyu Phom also visited the injured at the Referral Hospital, Dimapur. Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton who was in New Delhi rushed back and went to Mon directly from Guwahati.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will be visiting Mon on Monday morning accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and senior government officers to take an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and pay respect to the deceased.
