NIT Silchar

Silchar, Sept 18: Students at NIT Silchar have initiated a hunger strike to protest against the institution’s authorities in response to the recent tragic death of a fellow student. The administration has convened a meeting to address the pressing issues raised by the students and has passed a resolution.

The key concerns being discussed include:

  1. Attendance Policies: Students are seeking a reevaluation of the institution’s attendance policies, which they believe may have contributed to the student’s distress.
  2. Medical Leave: The handling of medical leave and related policies is under scrutiny to ensure fairness and compassion for students facing health issues.
  3. Supplementary Exams: Students are advocating for a more flexible approach to supplementary exams to accommodate those who may need additional support.
  4. Committee Formation: A committee has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s tragic suicide, as well as instances of vandalism during the protests.

Despite these measures, students have expressed dissatisfaction with the resolution as it does not address their demand for action against the Dean. Consequently, they have embarked on a hunger strike to emphasize their determination for justice.

The incident that led to this outcry involved Koj Buker, a third-year student at NIT Silchar, who tragically took his own life on campus. In response, his fellow classmates initiated a peaceful protest, which later escalated into violence. This escalation prompted the police to intervene, resulting in injuries to approximately 40 people.

Koj Buker, hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, was discovered lifeless in his hostel room. His classmates resisted the authorities’ efforts to remove his body, accusing the college administration of contributing to his tragic demise.

The hunger strike initiated by the students underscores the urgency and importance of addressing their concerns comprehensively, including a thorough examination of the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident and a review of institutional policies to prevent such tragedies in the future.
