Patna, Feb 12: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s NDA government in Bihar secured a decisive victory in the crucial floor test held on Monday, garnering support from 129 MLAs, including three from the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

However, the opposition staged a walkout during the proceedings.

Before the assembly, Nitish Kumar moved a motion seeking confidence in his new government formed with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), shortly after the House passed a resolution for the removal of RJD’s Awadh Bihari Chaudhary as Speaker of the Assembly.

Here’s a breakdown of the Bihar floor test:

  • Victory and Allegations: Following the victory, Nitish Kumar accused his former deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, of corrupt practices during the RJD’s previous tenure and vowed to initiate a probe into these allegations. He criticized the law and order situation under the RJD’s rule and pledged to address these issues.
  • Counter Attacks: Tejashwi Yadav, in his rebuttal, aimed Nitish Kumar, labeling him as “paltu Kumar” and asserting that he would halt Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s influence in the state. Yadav launched a scathing attack on Kumar, questioning his loyalty and integrity, and reminding him of the state’s condition during his previous tenure.

  • No-confidence Motion: Before the session commenced, a no-confidence motion was passed against Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary from RJD, resulting in his removal from office. This setback further compounded the challenges faced by the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ alliance.
  • Defections and Allegations: The ‘Mahagathbandhan’ suffered additional setbacks when three RJD MLAs defected to Nitish Kumar’s NDA government. These defections sparked controversy, with allegations of kidnapping and coercion leveled against Tejashwi Yadav’s camp.

The Bihar floor test underscored the intense political dynamics at play, highlighting the shifting alliances and power struggles within the state.
