New Delhi, June 26: In a session held on Wednesday, the Lok Sabha elected Om Birla, the candidate from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as the Speaker of the lower house of Parliament through a voice vote.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Birla on his election and expressed anticipation for his guidance over the next five years.
“Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy…The previous Lok Sabha passed several path-breaking legislations under your leadership,” PM Modi addressed Birla during the session.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Opposition, also extended his wishes to Birla and accompanied him to the chair alongside Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and PM Modi.
This election marked a departure from tradition as it was held due to a lack of consensus between the BJP-led NDA government and the Congress-led INDIA bloc opposition.
