Mukul Sangma

Shillong, Sept 21: Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma, has called for a thorough investigation into an alleged call center racket that duped international clients, including citizens from the United States and the UK. The scam was uncovered in 2017 when the state police raided the IFA Enterprise Call Centre, which operated from SS NetCom in Dhankheti, Shillong.

Sangma, who is currently an opposition leader with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), stressed the importance of identifying the kingpins behind this international cartel. He emphasized that a collaborative approach involving state law enforcement agencies, national-level authorities, and international agencies is essential to unravel the root causes of such criminal operations.

In his statement to reporters, Sangma expressed concern about the progress of the investigation. He questioned whether the case was being pursued with the necessary collaboration and in-depth investigative techniques, including forensic analysis. He urged state authorities, police departments, and law enforcement agencies to actively seek collaboration to ensure a comprehensive and effective investigation.

The call center racket in Shillong is just one example of the global phenomenon of fraudulent call centers that target unsuspecting victims, often posing as legitimate organizations like the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Such scams have been a cause for concern for law enforcement agencies worldwide, and tackling them requires coordinated efforts across borders and jurisdictions.

Sangma’s call for a proper investigation reflects the need for a thorough and rigorous approach to combat cybercrime and fraud schemes that harm individuals and organizations globally. Only through effective collaboration and a concerted effort can authorities hope to apprehend those responsible for such criminal activities and bring them to justice.
