Opposition MLAs walk out from Assam assembly over price hike issue on the first day of budget session

Guwahati, July 12: The opposition MLAs of Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Monday walked out from the Assam assembly on the first day of the budget session in protest against the price hike of petrol-diesel and commodities.

The opposition MLAs had moved an adjournment motion during the Budget Session and demanded the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Biswajt Daimary to hold a discussion over skyrocketing price hikes of petrol-diesel and commodities, but the speaker had rejected the opposition’s demand.

In protest against the rejection of their demands, the opposition MLAs led by Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a walkout from the assembly.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam said that the opposition MLAs had moved an adjournment motion and demanded the speaker to hold a discussion over price hike of fuel, commodities, but the speaker rejected the opposition’s demand.

An Assam minister and the speaker said that this is a matter under the central government and they can’t allow discussing the issue. The speaker had rejected our demands and in protest against it we had staged a walkout from the assembly,” Aminul Islam said.

Lone Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi said that he had also supported the opposition’s demand to hold a discussion over the price hike issue.

On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tabled the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill 2021 in the assembly for discussions.
