Meghalaya rated second best-governed state in India; CM express his happiness

Meghalaya, 31st October: Meghalaya has been selected as the second best-governed state in India of the Small States Category, with a Public Affair Index 2020 (PAI) of 0.797 after Goa (1.745).

According to an annual report released by PAI, a city-based non-profit organisation headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Kasturirangan, the states were ranked on governance performance based on a composite index in the context of sustainable development.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma expresses his happiness while sharing the post on Facebook.

He wrote, “Proud to share that #Meghalaya has ranked the 2nd Best Governed State in #India in the Small States Category based on the Public Affairs Index 2020 (PAI 2020) of the Public Affairs Centre (PAC) which is an annual ranking of the states of India on governance performance. The states are ranked on Governance performance based on a Composite Index. The governance performance is analyzed in the context of sustainable development defined by 3 pillars – Equity, Growth and Sustainability; 5 Themes; 13 SDGs and 50 indicators.”

Meghalaya rated second best-governed state in India, after which Himachal Pradesh bagged the third position with 0.725, Sikkim came fourth with 0.602, Tripura (0.145) and Arunachal Pradesh (0.048).

According to the report, the worst performers who scored negative points are Mizoram (-0.055) Nagaland (-0.116) followed by Uttarakhand (-0.277), Delhi (-0.289) and Manipur (-0.363).

Assam tea sells for Rs 75,000 per kg

Assam, 31st October: A rare variety of tea in Assam was sold at a record price of Rs 75,000 per kg at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). This special tea, known as Manohari Gold Tea, is produced by the Manohari Tea Estate in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

This sale comes as a ray of hope amid the global pandemic and its impact on the Assam tea industry.

The tea was sold by Contemporary Brokers Private Limited and purchased by Guwahati-based tea trader Vishnu Tea Company, which will sell it across the world on their digital e-commerce website 9amtea.com

“This is a great achievement amidst the pandemic which has affected the entire world. The Manohari Tea Estate has put in extra efforts to produce this speciality tea in the month of September and sent it to GTAC for sale,” the GTABA secretary said. The GTAC is emerging as a centre for showcasing high-priced speciality tea, he said, adding that an exotic tea is judged by its aroma, taste and colour.

 Last year also set by the same mark of tea at Rs 50,000 per kg by the same tea garden.

On August 13 last year, another specialised Tea had recorded with Upper Assam’s Dikom Tea Estate selling its Golden Butterfly tea at a record price of Rs 75,000 at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.

Rajan Lohia, Manohari Tea Estate director, said, “This year 2.5 kg of handmade Gold Tea was produced, out of which 1.2 kg was sold in the auction and the remaining will be available at select outlets, including GTAC lounge, as demand for one of the rarest teas in the world continues to grow.”

Arms dealer along with arms nabbed in Nagaland

Guwahati, 31st October: Security forces had apprehended an arms dealer in Nagaland, Peren district.

Security forces in an operation along with police representative apprehended an arms dealer near Henikungalwa in Peren district on Friday evening.

Based on specific input, the security forces launched an operation and apprehended the arms dealer from the area.

The troops recovered one point 22mm rifle with magazine and 13 live rounds of ammunition from the possession of the arms dealer.

The apprehended person along with recovered items were handed over to Jalukie police station for further investigations.

Jishnu Barua to be next Chief Secretary of Assam

Guwahati, 31st October: 1988 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer Jishnu Barua will be the next Chief Secretary of Assam.

The State government on Friday appointed Jishnu Barua as the new Chief Secretary of the state.

Barua is currently in charge as Additional Chief Secretary of Home & Political, Revenue & Disaster Management, Secretariat administration (archives) and Border protection & development, Implementation of Assam Accord departments of the state government.

Jishnu Barua would take over as the current CS Kumar Sanjay Krishna will be retired on October 31 and he was appointed as the CS of Assam in December last year.

Mizoram’s Siaha achieves success in artificial insemination in pigs

Aizawl, 29th October: The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary office of Mizoram’s Siaha district, has achieved the path-breaking success of Artificial Insemination in pigs project.

AH&Vety Office, Siaha had tried to carry out A.I. in Pig project since last couple of years, but success averted so far due to PRRS and some other factors.

The long-awaited success story of AI in pig was scripted last year 2019, precisely in the month of February, when two piglets for AI in pigs project were procured from Lungpuizawl Vety Farm, and these two piglets Landrace leh Yorkshire were reared at Vety Complex, Siaha to its full maturity and their sperm get extracted from July this year.

Soon after, AI in pigs project was carried out on two sows belonging to FC.Zase, College Vaih and C. Rohlira, New Siaha, respectively on the July 4.

These two sows successfully delivered their offsprings on Wednesday night.

Sow belonging to FC Zase delivered 8 piglets and C. Rohlira’s delivered 6 piglets.

The Sperm of 1 Boar is sufficed to inseminate about 200/250 sows and there are 131 artificial insemination sows in Siaha district as of now. If all these 131 sows successfully delivered their offsprings too, then Siaha district will soon become self-sufficient in pork.

Police arrested three persons who tried to abduct a man in Assam

Guwahati, 29th October: Police had arrested three persons who tried to abduct a man from his house in Assam Karimganj district.

Police said that, on October 12 night, three persons had tried to abduct a man named Ranjit Goswami from his house at Baroigram area by showing a toy pistol.

Locals caught one among the gang on October 12 night but two others had managed to escape from the area.

On Wednesday evening, police had arrested other two persons and recovered a vehicle, mobile phones, a toy pistol and other items.

Assam Karimganj district Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar said that, all three persons have been arrested.

“We have recovered one vehicle, mobile phones, a toy pistol in possession from them,” the police officer said.

Three youths arrested for raping three minor girls in Assam

Guwahati, 29th October: Police had arrested three persons who allegedly raped three minor girls by luring them on a pretext of showing Durga puja pandals in Assam Goalpara district.

According to the reports, the incident took place at Rongjuli High School playground on the night of October 22.

Police said that the three accused persons lured the victim minor girls on a pretext of showing various Durga puja pandals in the district and allegedly raped them.

The accused persons had used a four-wheeled vehicle and a motorcycle and police also seized it.

Goalapara district Additional Superintendent of Police Amitabh Basumutary said that, the victims had lodged a complaint to Rongjuli police station Assam on October 27 evening and police had registered a case under various sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police had arrested two accused on Tuesday night and one on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the victims claimed that the accused persons had captured the video of the incident in their mobile phones and police have started an investigation on it.

Three poachers held with leopard skin and other body parts in Assam

Guwahati, 29th October: Police and forest officials had arrested three poachers leopard skin in Assam’s Biswanath district.

Based on intelligence input, a team of police and forest officials had launched operation at Gingia area under Biswanath Wildlife Division on Wednesday and arrested the poachers.

The team had recovered skin and other body parts of a full-grown tiger in possession from them.

The arrested poachers were identified as Yudhisthir Tanti, Bullet Munda and Subhash Mirdha.

Forest officials suspect that, they killed the leopard along Assam-Arunachal border.

A forest officer of Biswanath Wildlife Division said that the poachers were arrested while they were trying to carry the body parts and skin of the leopard for selling.

JEE (Mains) topper in Assam arrested for allegedly using proxy for exam

Guwahati, 29th October: Assam police had arrested the topper of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) in Assam, his father and three others for allegedly using a proxy candidate to write JEE (Mains) entrance examination in Guwahati in September.

The son of the doctor achieved top rank from Assam in the entrance examination with a score of 99.8 per cent without sitting for the examination.

The arrested persons were identified as Dr Jyotirmoy Das, his son Neel Nakshatra Das, Hamendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirukamal Pathak.

According to the reports, a person named Mitradev Sharma – a resident of Mathura Nagar in Guwahati had recently lodged a complaint at Azara police station under Guwahati city police against the topper of JEE (Mains) examination from Assam and police started investigation.

In connection with a case (no – 624/2020) has been registered at Azara police station under sections 120(B)/419/420/406 of IPC and R/W 66D of IT Act.

Rajib Saikia, CPRO of Assam police said that, police on Wednesday had arrested five persons in connection with the case.

On the other hand, Guwahati city police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said that, the candidate used a proxy candidate to write examination through the help of another agency.

“Our investigation is on and staffers of the examination centre might also be involved with it. We are searching to nab all persons who involved with it,” the top cop said.

On the other hand, the complainant alleged that the father of the candidate had paid a huge sum of money for this purpose.

Union Minister Smriti Irani Tests Positive For COVID-19

New Delhi, 28th October: Union Minister Smriti Irani today informed that she has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Posting the news on her official Twitter account, she said –

“It is rare for me to search for words while making an announcement; hence here’s me keeping it simple — I’ve tested positive for #COVID and would request those who came in contact with me to get themselves tested at the earliest.”

The 44-year-old actor-turned-politician had been actively campaigning for the Bihar elections, seeking votes for the National Democratic Alliance government in the state.

On October 24, she had addressed a rally at Gujarat’s Vadodara and Bihar’s Bikram area while on October 26, she had addressed a rally in Bodh Gaya for the Bihar Assembly election.

The Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani, had also travelled to her Lok Sabha (LS) constituency Amethi last week and announced several projects for her constituency, which used to be a Gandhi family’s pocket borough for years until she wrested the prestigious seat from Rahul Gandhi in last year’s parliamentary polls, during the festive season.

A number of public figures including Home Minister Amit Shah, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan have tested positive for the coronavirus and have since recovered.

Meanwhile, India’s coronavirus tally neared the 80-lakh mark on Wednesday with 43,893 new Covid-19 infections. India reports 43,893 new COVID-19 cases, tally stands at 79,90,322. India’s total cases surged to 79,90,322 on Wednesday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)
