Assam government to approach the Centre to ban PFI

After Uttar Pradesh, Assam government will also approach the centre to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) following its alleged involvement in the violent incidents during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in the state.

Assam Finance minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that, the state government will approach the centre to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI), which was found their active involvement in the recent violent incidents in the state during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests.


The Assam minister said that, the state government is now waiting for the report of the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL) and if the report signaled certain incriminating thing then the government will also propose ban of PFI in line of Uttar Pradesh.

“In Assam, the day we have cracked down the PFI, vandalism and all these kinds of things have reduced. Our people have given certain electronic evidences to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Guwahati. Now we are waiting for the CFL report,” Himanta said.

“We have discovered certain important things that, the PFI used code language for coordinating. PFI is claiming themselves as a democratic organization. In a democratic organization, when coordinating senior leaders, they don’t use code languages. But the most of top brass leaders of PFI have used on coded language and that is very interesting. PFI in Assam is using code languages and we are trying to break the codes, actually what is there. We have also recovered lathis and other things from their offices and certain electronic evidences have been given to the CFL,” the Assam minister said.

Assam police had arrested two top office bearers of the Islamist organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) of Assam unit in connection with violent incidents in Guwahati in the second week of December last year.

Assam Police had arrested PFI Assam unit president Aminul Hoque and Mohammad Muzammil Hoque, the press secretary of the PFI.

Assam government submits its recommendations to center about framing of rules for implementing CAA : Sarbananda Sonowal

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said that, the state government has already submitted its recommendations to the centre regarding the framing of rules for implementing the new citizenship act in the state.

Interacting with the media persons in Guwahati on the first day of the New Year, the Assam Chief Minister assured the indigenous people of Assam that, he will not do anything which can harm them, the state.

“The people have not needed to worry about the CAA. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act is a law for the entire country. For the greater interest of Assam and how this law will implement in the state, the state government has already submitted its recommendations to the center regarding framing the rules for implementing it,” Sonowal said.

Sonowal said that – “No one force can threaten the existence of Assamese until I am the Chief Minister of Assam.”

“Some people have spread out some misinformation about the CAA and they have given numbers that 1 crore, 2 crore people will come to Assam. It is not true and as the Chief Minister of the state, I am also monitored it. I will not do anything which is against the indigenous people of Assam and it is not possible for me,” Sonowal said.

“Today, some people designed us such as we are criminal and we sold our community. We have all types of plan that how to protect the Assamese people, indigenous people of Assam. Today, January 1, 2020, I want to say that, the indigenous people of the state will be safe forever. No one force of the world can threaten the existence of Assamese. For this, our government is going to implement the clause 6 of the Assam Accord,” Sonowal said.

NF Railway incurred losses of over Rs 100 crore due to anti-CAA protests

The Northeast Frontier Railway incurred losses of more than Rs 100 crore due to the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

In a press release, the NF Railway stated that, due to violent agitation by protestors against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in various areas within the jurisdiction of NF Railway which started on December 9, cumulative loss incurred by NF Railway crossed Rs 100 crore till December 30.

“NF Railway not only incurred losses due to damages caused to railway properties but also due to cancellations of passenger trains as well as goods carrying trains to and from NF zone to other zones. The damages caused include burning down of railway stations, damages to railway track, level crossing gates, burning of important communication and other electronic gears,” said in the release.

Total damages caused to railway properties in divisions like Tinsukia, Katihar, Lumding, Rangiya is about Rs 10 crore. The loss incurred in originating earnings due to loss in passenger earnings is about Rs 30.13 crore, the loss in freight earnings is about Rs 63.42 crore while the loss in parcel earnings is about Rs 5.05 crore from December 9 till December 30.

The release also stated that, during this period, about 38.86 lakh passenger could not take up their journey in NF Railway due to cancellations of trains.

While NF Railway immediately swung into action to restore train services after improvement in law and order situation by introducing manual train operations in some affected portions, the damages caused in other sections are still being repaired.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday announced it while he held a meeting with the representatives of 22 indigenous Sahitya Sabhas (Literary Bodies) including Asom Sahitya Sabha and Bodo Sahitya Sabha at Brahmaputra State Guest House in Guwahati.

A government release stated that, as per decision taken in the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister announced that state government would provide one time financial grant of Rs 50,000 to 1000 new writers belonging to various communities of the state under “Bhasha Gaurav” scheme which was a budget announcement.

The Assam Chief Minister had also announced that, the state government would provide Rs 10 crore to Corpus Fund of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Rs 5 crore to Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Rs 3 crore each to the other indigenous Sahitya Sabhas as one time grant.

Accordingly, Asom Sahitya Sabha would be able to derive an amount of Rs 80 lakh annually as interest from the corpus fund while Bodo Sahitya Sabha would receive Rs 40 lakh and other indigenous Sahitya Sabhas would get Rs 24 lakh each annually.

Sarbananda Sonowal hoped that this scheme would be able to inspire young generation writers to engage in literary works in different indigenous languages of the state.

During the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister urged the indigenous literary bodies to put emphasis on research works for preservation and promotion of indigenous language and culture and assured all help from the state government in this regard.

The representatives of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha Assam, Deori Sahitya Sabha, Dimasa Sahitya Sabha, Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha, Nikhil Rabha Sahitya Sabha, Karbi Sahitya Sabha, Mising Sahitya Sabha, Nikhil Bishnupriya Sahitya Sabha, Purbanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha, Tiwa Sahitya Sabha, Asom Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Garo Sahitya Sabha, Moran Sahitya Sabha, Asom Chah Janagusti Sahitya Sabha, Sonowal Kachari Sahitya Sabha, Kurukh Sahitya Sabha, Konch Rajbangshi Sahitya Sabha, Shautal Sahitya Sabha, Mundari Sahitya Sabha, Sarania Kachari Sahitya Sabha took part in the meeting.

Assam CM directs Food & Civil Supplies department for expeditious implementation of free sugar scheme in tea gardens

The Assam Chief Minister also directed the department for holding a launch meeting of the scheme towards last week of January next year and to look for means to safely dispose the plastic bags containing sugar without causing environmental harm.

Around 6 lakh beneficiaries would be benefitted by free sugar distribution scheme in the tea garden areas where each beneficiary would receive a packet of 2 kg each per month.

Reviewing the functioning of the department at his conference room at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati Sonowal emphasised on strengthening of the department for effective public service delivery.

The Assam Chief Minister called on the department to spread the right message about the scheme through which the State Government would strive to fulfil nutritional requirements lacking in the diets of tea garden population.

Appreciating the target of 3.62 lakh metric tonne (MT) of paddy procurement next year in the state by the department, Sonowal directed for video recording the farmers’ stories whose paddy would be procured by the government with good prices and release those videos in platforms like social media so that other farmers would get inspiration to work hard and produce more.

Among other agencies, Food Corporation of India (FCI) alone has set a target of procuring 2 lakh MT paddy from state farmers. In view of the spiraling onion prices and prevailing market conditions, the Assam Chief Minister instructed for taking preemptive action for keeping the prices of the essential kitchen commodity under control next year by contacting agencies like National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and National Federation of Farmers’ Procurement, Processing and Retailing Cooperatives of India Ltd. (NACOF) etc. for procuring onions from Nasik on state government’s behalf and stock it for sending to state later.

Sonowal also directed the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to write a letter to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for providing extra LPG connections to the poor women under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojna apart from those beneficiaries selected from SECC data.

“I had already taken up the matter with Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and latter had assured of positive response in this regard. The target of providing LPG connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojna in Assam had already been achieved according to SECC data,” Sonowal said.

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department Phani Bhushan Choudhury, Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Principal Secretary of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department Biswaranjan Samal, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia were also present in the meeting among other officials of the concerned departments.

NIA court sent Assam peasant leader Akhil Gogoi to 14-day judicial custody

The Special Court of National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwhaati on Thursday had sent RTI activist and Assam peasant leader Akhil Gogoi to 14-day judicial custody.

The NIA had produced Akhil Gogoi before the court and sought 10-day more custody, but the court rejected the plea and sent Gogoi to judicial custody.

On December 17, the court had sent Gogoi to 10-day NIA custody.

The premier investigation agency had arrested Akhil Gogoi under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) amid protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and registered a case (no 13/2019) under section 120 (B), 124 (A), 153 (A), 153 (B) of IPC and section 18, 39 of UAPA against him.

A top source of NIA said that, Akhil Gogoi has linked with Maoists. Akhil Gogoi was arrested by the Assam police on December 12 from Jorhat and later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The NIA team had conducted search operation at the house of Akhil Gogoi and the office of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on Thursday morning and seized several items, documents, books etc.

A team of NIA had conducted search operation at the house of Akhil Gogoi at Nizarapar area in the capital city of Assam. During the search operation the NIA team had seized as many as 11 documents, files, laptop, printer machine, PAN card, bank passbok and other items.

The NIA team had also conducted search operation at the office of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) in Guwahati.

A top official of Assam police said that, not only Akhil Gogoi, some leaders of KMSS have also linked with Maoists and the KMSS activists were allegedly involved in BJP MLA house attack and public properties attack incidents at Chabua in Tinsukia district during the anti-CAA protests.
