New Delhi, June 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the critical need for consensus in decision-making for the country’s welfare, stressing its utmost importance ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha’s first session.

His remarks come as the NDA government begins its third consecutive term with a reduced mandate, falling short of the majority mark for the first time in ten years.

Addressing the Parliament session’s commencement, PM Modi underscored the government’s commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of India’s 1.4 billion people through collaborative efforts among coalition partners.

“Over the last decade, we have upheld the tradition that while a majority is essential for governance, consensus is paramount for running the nation. Our constant endeavor will be to serve Mother India and realize the dreams of every citizen, respecting everyone’s views and upholding the Constitution,” he stated.

PM Modi urged Opposition members to uphold parliamentary decorum, emphasizing the public’s desire for substantive debates over theatrics. He called for a responsible Opposition that contributes constructively to democratic processes, contrasting with the disruptive actions seen in the past.

Reflecting on the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Emergency, PM Modi condemned the event as a dark chapter in India’s democracy, emphasizing the nation’s resolve to safeguard constitutional principles and ensure such events are never repeated.

The ongoing Parliament session, following recent Lok Sabha elections, includes the oath-taking of newly elected MPs and the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26.

President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses on June 27, setting the stage for robust legislative deliberations amid heightened Opposition scrutiny.

The Rajya Sabha’s 264th Session will convene on June 27, with the joint session scheduled to conclude on July 3 before resuming for the monsoon session on July 22.
