New Delhi, Aug 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, highlighting the urgent need for states to enhance women’s safety amidst growing public outrage over recent crimes.

He stressed the importance of swift investigations and severe punishments to restore public trust following the horrific rape and murder of a woman doctor at a Kolkata hospital.

In his speech, PM Modi conveyed his deep concern, stating, “The public’s anger over atrocities against women is palpable. As a society, we must address these issues seriously. Speedy investigations and stringent punishments for perpetrators are crucial to rebuilding societal confidence.”

He criticized the lack of media coverage for severe punishments and called for a heightened focus on deterring such crimes by publicizing the consequences.

Earlier, thousands of women in West Bengal rallied in the streets to protest the assault on the doctor from RG Kar Medical College Hospital.

Their “Reclaim the Night” demonstrations were met with violence as unidentified individuals vandalized parts of the medical facility.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also vowed to protest for justice and urged the CBI, now overseeing the investigation, to ensure a resolution by the upcoming Sunday.
