Guwahati, Feb 04: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Assam on Saturday evening marked the commencement of a two-day visit dedicated to inaugurating and laying the foundation for projects valued at ₹11,600 crores, as announced by the office of the Assam chief minister.

Public Rally and Project Initiatives at Khanapara Veterinary College Field

The highlight of the visit is a significant public rally at Guwahati’s Khanapara Veterinary College Field.

Here, PM Modi is set to launch the ₹500 crore Maa Kamakhya Divyalok Pariyojana project and a ₹831 crore initiative to upgrade Guwahati’s Nehru Stadium to FIFA standards. Additionally, the PM will unveil the ₹3,444 crore Asom Mala 2.0 initiative, aimed at enhancing 43 roads and constructing 38 bridges across the state.

Foundations Laid for Healthcare, Sports, and Commercial Spaces

Several foundational stones are set to be laid during the visit, including those for the ₹578 crore Karimganj Medical College, the ₹300 crore Chandrapur Stadium, and the ₹297 crore Unity Mall Development, focusing on creating commercial and recreational spaces, as stated by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

Protests Against CAA Ahead of PM’s Visit

Before PM Modi’s scheduled visit, Assam witnessed protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Coordination Committee Against CAA, Assam, organized a demonstration at Guwahati’s Lakhidhar Borah Khetra. Renowned figures like Hiren Gohain, a Sahitya Academy award-winning writer, joined the protest, demanding the withdrawal of CAA, citing concerns about discrimination against a specific religious group.

Warm Welcome for PM Modi in Guwahati

Despite the ongoing protests, PM Modi received a warm welcome in Guwahati. In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to the people of Guwahati for their affection.

The enthusiastic reception was further emphasized by the vibrant celebration in Khanapara, where thousands illuminated 100,000 diyas, creating a visually stunning backdrop for the Prime Minister’s arrival.
