Chirang, Aug 14: A poacher met his demise in a shootout with forest rangers in Assam’s Chirang district.

The encounter occurred following a joint operation carried out by the Forest Department of Chirang and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), resulting in the arrest of three poachers near the India-Bhutan border.

The incident transpired on the night of August 13th in Jalukani, under the jurisdiction of Amguri police station, located on the Bhutan border within Chirang district.

The apprehended poachers were identified as Biren Narzary, Noweswar Basumatary, and Nal Bahadur Magar.

In the course of the operation, the poachers allegedly attempted to assault the police officials, leading to Noweswar Basumatary sustaining bullet injuries, and a constable also getting injured.

Although Noweswar Basumatary was transferred to a government hospital for treatment, he was eventually pronounced dead.

The trio of arrested poachers hails from Jaipur Malibhita in Chirang. Furthermore, authorities seized rhino hooves, skin, a handmade pistol, and bullets from their possession.

It is worth mentioning that in recent months, at least two rhinos have been found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Manas region.
