Guwahati, Feb 13: Assam’s Pradan Baruah, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) representing Lakhimpur, has found himself among a group of nine silent lawmakers in the Lok Sabha.

Despite his consistent attendance, Baruah has notably refrained from actively participating in debates or discussions, maintaining a silent presence in the parliamentary sessions.

While Baruah has submitted a total of 15 written questions, his voice has been conspicuously absent during debates, raising questions about the depth of his parliamentary engagement and representation.

Despite maintaining an impressive attendance rate of 85 percent, surpassing the average of 79 percent among all MPs, Baruah’s reserved demeanor has drawn attention to the varying modes of parliamentary involvement.

Baruah is not alone in this regard, as the list of silent MPs includes other prominent figures such as Dibyendu Adhikari from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Sunny Deol, the renowned Bollywood actor-turned-politician representing Gurdaspur for the BJP.

Despite his iconic dialogues on screen, Deol’s silence in the Lok Sabha has been noticeable, reminiscent of his famous line “ta-reekh pe tareekh.”

Similarly, Shatrughan Sinha, the TMC MP elected in a by-election in April 2022, has also maintained a reserved stance throughout his tenure in the Lok Sabha.

Additionally, MPs like Ramesh Chandrappa Jigajinagi of the BJP, who faced prolonged absence due to health issues, and Atul Rai of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), who was incarcerated until August last year, have contributed to the cadre of silent lawmakers in the lower house of Parliament.
