Tura, Jan 06: President Droupadi Murmu is poised to inaugurate the 5th Meghalaya Games in Tura, marking the first instance of the Games being hosted outside Shillong City.

Scheduled from January 15 to 20, 2024, the event has gained significance with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma confirming President Murmu’s participation.

Expressing his anticipation on Instagram, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized that President Murmu’s presence would serve as a significant encouragement for the youth of the state. The Games are expected to draw the participation of over 3,000 athletes competing across 22 different disciplines.

In a notable inclusion, the 5th Meghalaya Games will feature traditional games representing the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes. This move aligns with an effort to embrace and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The host city, Tura, situated in the West Garo Hills District, has seen substantial preparations for the event. The state government has allocated a budget exceeding Rs 23 crore to ensure the successful organization of the Games.
