New Delhi, Feb 01: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her presentation of the Union Budget 2024, emphasized the focus on the country’s GDP, stating that governance, development, and performance were key priorities.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman highlighted, “An exemplary track record of governance, development, and performance, besides delivering on high growth, in terms of Gross Domestic Product, the government is equally focused on a more comprehensive GDP – that is Governance, Development, and Performance.”

She emphasized the government’s commitment to providing transparent, accountable, people-centric, and prompt administration with a citizen-first and minimum government, maximum governance approach.

Sitharaman noted, “The impact of all-round development is discernible in all sectors,” pointing out macro-economic stability, including in the external sector, and the overall well-being of the economy. She remarked that people are living better, earning better, and have greater aspirations for the future.

Highlighting positive economic indicators, Sitharaman stated, “Average real income of people has increased by 50 per cent, inflation is moderate, and people are being enabled to pursue their aspirations.”

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Interim Budget 2024.

The Interim Budget was presented as Sitharaman’s sixth budget as the Finance Minister and the last in the second term of the Modi government, with Lok Sabha polls scheduled for later this year.

The Budget Session of Parliament commenced with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Sitharaman’s achievement of presenting six budgets equals the record set by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who, as finance minister, presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964.
