Assam Flood people

Guwahati, June 30: The flood situation in Assam is gradually improving, but the aftermath continues to impact the lives of over 20,000 people in Barpeta district. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 37 villages in three revenue circles are still reeling under water.

With 38 hectares of cropland submerged in the lower Assam district, many flood-affected villagers have sought refuge on roads and embankments as their homes remain flooded. Kanchu Miya, one of the affected villagers from the Agdiya Pathar area, has been living on the road for the past eight days.

While some areas have seen improvement, the floodwaters are yet to recede completely, making it impossible for residents to return to their homes. Relief camps have provided shelter for some villagers, but others are struggling without proper assistance. As a daily wage laborer, Kanchu Miya has faced significant losses due to the flood, including damage to household goods and personal belongings.

In addition to the human impact, the flood has also affected approximately 21,000 domestic animals in Barpeta district. Furthermore, in five districts of Assam – Bajali, Barpeta, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur – around 38,000 people are still grappling with the consequences of the flood.

Across the state, a total of 1,526.08 hectares of croplands in nine districts remain submerged. Tragically, the floods have claimed the lives of seven individuals so far this year.

Efforts to provide relief and support to the affected communities are ongoing, with authorities working to restore normalcy and address the needs of those impacted by the floods. However, the road to recovery remains challenging and sustained assistance and resources will be crucial in helping the affected population rebuild their lives and livelihoods in the aftermath of this natural disaster.
