1. PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts, supported by other nations, reportedly prevented a Russian nuclear attack on Ukraine.
2. The US had been vigilant for such a strike as Putin’s forces faced setbacks.
3. India’s intervention, along with others like China, may have influenced Putin’s decision, the report claimed.

New Delhi, March 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagement, alongside efforts from various nations, reportedly thwarted a potential nuclear attack by Russia on Ukraine, according to a recent report.

The report, quoting two senior officials, suggested that the United States had been on high alert for a potential nuclear strike by Russia on Ukraine amid President Vladimir Putin’s army facing multiple setbacks on the battlefield.

Allegedly, intervention from PM Modi and leaders like China’s Xi Jinping may have dissuaded Putin from executing his plan to target Ukraine with a nuclear missile in 2022, as US officials cited in the report.

According to the report, outreach and public statements from leaders like Modi and Xi Jinping were instrumental in averting the crisis.

The report disclosed that as Ukrainian forces advanced towards Kherson, entire Russian units faced the risk of being encircled. Meanwhile, Moscow reportedly suggested that Ukraine might resort to using a dirty bomb.

This perception within the US administration fueled concerns that a significant loss at Kherson could prompt Russia to deploy nuclear weapons.

To prevent such a scenario, the US sought support from non-allied nations, including India, to dissuade Russia from resorting to extreme measures.

A senior US administration official emphasized the role of India, China, and other nations in influencing Russia’s decision-making process.

India, consistently advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has condemned civilian casualties.

During the SCO summit in Uzbekistan in September 2022, PM Modi conveyed to Putin that the present era demands peaceful solutions rather than warfare, affirming India’s commitment to pursuing paths toward peace.
