Reschedule poll dates: All Manipur Christian Organisation to Election Commission

Manipur, Feb 5: All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) has determined to ship a reminder to the Election Commission of India to reschedule poll dates.

Political events and organizations urged to reschedule the primary part of meeting polls on February 27. They have acknowledged that the day being a Sunday is the prayer day of the Christian neighbourhood.

A gathering of denominational leaders of the Christian religion was held on Thursday. On January 17, leaders of the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) met the CEO, Manipur with a memorandum requesting the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to change the date.

AMCO president S Prim Vaiphei mentioned that the assembly resolved to give a reminder to ECI to reschedule the primary part of the poll dates in Manipur which falls on Sunday. “The meeting decided to move court if ECI does not reschedule”.

The Christian community will not sit back but will continue to fight to ensure the rights of the Christians,” Vaiphei added.

Christian inhabitants account for 41.29 p.c of Manipur’s three million individuals. There are 41.39 per cent are Hindu and eight.40 per cent of persons belong to Muslim.

Naga People’s Front (NPF) President Awangbou Newmai mentioned it’s a sacred day for the Christian neighbourhood and it’s a day of relaxation and worship for them. “India is a secular nation that treats every religion equally and violating one religious right is not the principle of secularism. ECI should treat the Christian’s rights equally and therefore, the first phase of the poll should be rescheduled.”
