Tezu Airport

Itanagar, Sept 22: The revamped Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district is set to be inaugurated on September 24, with Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chief Minister Pema Khandu leading the ceremony.

The development of this airport infrastructure was met with gratitude from Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accelerating infrastructure upgrades in the region. He highlighted the significance of the Tezu Airport, stating that it will enhance connectivity in the Northeast, promote tourism, trade, and employment opportunities.

The newly developed infrastructure at Tezu Airport includes an extended runway, a new apron, a modern terminal building, a fire station, and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, all at a total cost of Rs 170 crore.

Spread across 212 acres of land, Tezu Airport is equipped to handle operations for ATR-72-type aircraft, ensuring improved connectivity for the region. It originally commenced operations in 2018 under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme. Currently, it offers regular scheduled flights to Dibrugarh, Imphal, and Guwahati through Alliance Air and Flybig Airlines.

The terminal building covers an area of 4,000 square meters and has a peak-hour passenger capacity of 300. It currently features five check-in counters, with plans to expand to eight in the future. The airport also boasts two arrival carousels and two aircraft parking bays suitable for ATR-72-type aircraft.

Several sustainable features have been incorporated into the terminal building, including a double-insulated roofing system, an energy-efficient lighting system, solid waste management, water reclamation for flushing and horticulture, and integrated rainwater harvesting.

This infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance the airport’s capacity to handle increased traffic, further connect the northeastern region with the rest of the country, boost tourism and trade, and contribute to employment generation in the area.
