Guwahati, Feb 29: Former Congress leader Rana Goswami made a significant political shift by joining the BJP, marking his transition in a formal ceremony held at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on February 29.

The event, graced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP State President Bhabesh Kalita, underscored Goswami’s decision to align himself with the ruling party.

Goswami’s move came after he tendered his resignation from the Congress party on February 28, followed by his journey to New Delhi.

In his resignation letter addressed to KC Venugopal, General Secretary (organisation) of Congress, Goswami expressed his decision to step down from his roles as the working president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and as an active member of the Indian National Congress.

Amidst speculation surrounding Goswami’s potential shift to the BJP, Assam BJP President Bhabesh Kalita travelled to New Delhi for a high-level meeting with the former Congress leader and other key BJP leaders, including Assam General Secretary (organisation) Assam, GR Ravindra Raju, and Assam Co-Incharge, Pawan Sharma.

Responding to queries regarding Goswami’s anticipated move, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged Goswami’s stature within the Congress and expressed his willingness to welcome him into the BJP fold.

Rana Goswami, a prominent Congress figure in Assam, previously served as a Member of Parliament from the Jorhat constituency, further amplifying the significance of his political realignment.

In light of Goswami’s resignation, Assam Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, emphasized the need for clarity regarding Goswami’s departure from the Congress ranks.

Saikia underscored Goswami’s extensive history with the party, highlighting the various roles and responsibilities entrusted to him over the years.

Saikia also addressed the broader trend of Congress leaders joining the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, attributing such shifts to a combination of factors including the fear of legal repercussions and the lure of personal benefits under the BJP’s governance.

These developments reflect the intricate dynamics of political allegiance and strategic maneuvering within the Assam political landscape, signaling potential shifts in power dynamics and electoral strategies leading up to future elections.
