Guwahati, Feb 25: Amidst the growing crisis within the Assam Congress party, sources indicate that senior Congress leader Rana Goswami is poised to resign from the party.

Reports suggest that a meeting took place at Rana Goswami’s Tocklai residence on the evening of February 24, during which he expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of prominence within the party ranks.

Consequently, he has reportedly decided to part ways with the party in advance of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Speculation is rife that Rana Goswami is considering joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), adding fuel to the ongoing political turmoil.

Having previously won elections twice—in 2006 and 2011—to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Jorhat constituency, Rana Goswami’s potential departure marks a significant shift in Assam’s political landscape.

In July 2021, he was appointed as the Working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

This development unfolds against a backdrop of several Congress leaders and party workers defecting to the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in recent times. These shifts have significantly altered the political dynamics of the state.

Despite assertions from the Congress party that its strength remains intact and it is prepared to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with the backing of other parties under the INDIA alliance, the ongoing crisis presents a different narrative as the polls approach.
