Tharoor Manipur

Imphal, May 07: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has called for President’s rule in Manipur amid the ongoing clashes between tribal communities and members of the dominant Meitei community. Tharoor criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that voters in Manipur feel “grossly betrayed” just a year after voting them back into power.

The state has been witnessing ethnic clashes between Meiteis, who make up over 53% of the population, and the tribal communities, especially Kukis, residing in the hill districts.

The recent violence was sparked by a proposal to include Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The death toll has risen to at least 55, and the state government has relaxed the curfew to allow people to buy essential items for three hours in the Churachandpur district on Sunday morning.

Tharoor took to Twitter to express his concern over the violence and criticized the state government’s inability to control the situation. He said that it is time for President’s Rule in the state as the current government is not capable of fulfilling the duties they were elected for. Tharoor’s comments come after the recent violence in Manipur that left many dead and injured.
