New Delhi, March 08: Sudha Murty, the renowned Indian educator and author, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a decision announced on Friday.

PM Modi shared this news on X, expressing his delight over Murty’s nomination and highlighting her significant contributions to various fields including social work, philanthropy, and education.

In his announcement, made on the occasion of International Women’s Day, PM Modi emphasized Murty’s presence in the Upper House as a testament to women power, showcasing the immense strength and potential of women in shaping the nation’s destiny.

Sudha Murty, who is married to Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, is widely recognized for her prolific writing in both Kannada and English.

She has authored numerous novels, technical books, and travelogues. Murty is also the mother of venture capitalist Akshata Murty, who is married to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Although currently not in India, Murty expressed her gratitude to PM Modi for the nomination, describing it as a significant Women’s Day gift and acknowledging the new responsibility it entails in serving the country.

Born on August 19, 1950, in Shiggaon, Karnataka, Sudha Murty began her career as a computer scientist and engineer. She made history as the first female engineer hired at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco).

Murty’s philanthropic endeavors are extensive and impactful. As the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, she has addressed various societal issues such as poverty, healthcare, and sanitation.

Her initiatives include the construction of thousands of homes in flood-affected areas, the establishment of libraries in schools, and funding for the construction of public toilets.

Her influence extends globally, as evidenced by her founding of the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University, showcasing her commitment to preserving India’s rich literary heritage on an international platform.
