Assam inspector

Guwahati, May 17: In a devastating incident, Junmoni Rabha, a fearless sub-inspector of Assam Police, lost her life in a car accident. The collision occurred when her private car collided head-on with a container truck in the Nagaon district.

Junmoni Rabha, who was only 30 years old, was affectionately known as the ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabang cop’ due to her indomitable spirit and resemblance to iconic Hindi film police characters. She was alone in her vehicle and not wearing her uniform at the time of the tragic accident.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised suspicions of foul play, prompting her family to demand an impartial investigation into the incident.

Upon receiving notification at around 2:30 am, a police patrol team rushed to the scene and immediately transported Junmoni Rabha to a nearby hospital.

Tragically, doctors declared her dead upon arrival. The container truck involved in the accident, bearing a registration number from Uttar Pradesh, was seized by the police. However, the driver managed to flee the scene following the collision.

The Superintendent of Police for Nagaon, Leena Doley, arrived at the scene in the morning to assess the situation. At present, the police remain uncertain as to why Sub-Inspector Rabha was traveling alone in civilian attire, without any security, in her private vehicle towards Upper Assam.

Family members of the deceased have expressed their lack of knowledge regarding her whereabouts and activities leading up to the accident. They strongly suspect foul play and demand an impartial investigation to uncover the truth behind her untimely demise.

During a media interaction, Sumitra Rabha, the mother of the deceased, alleged that her daughter’s death was a premeditated murder orchestrated by an unidentified group or racket.

Sumitra Rabha, along with Junmoni’s aunt Subarna Bodo, appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and ensure that the perpetrators responsible for this “deliberately orchestrated” accident face appropriate punishment.

Bodo further revealed that on the night before the incident, a team of senior police officials had conducted a raid at Junmoni’s official residence in Nagaon and seized approximately Rs. 1 lakh.

During the raid, Junmoni’s mother was present, and they claim that the seized money rightfully belongs to her, earned from her small-scale poultry and pig farming business. They have urged the police to return the money, as it is needed to perform the last rites of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Police in Assam, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, stated that an FIR had been registered against Junmoni Rabha while she was alive at the North Lakhimpur Police Station. The FIR includes charges such as criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery, attempt to cause death, wrongful confinement, and extortion. The registration of the FIR was based on a complaint lodged by a woman.

Considering the public’s demand for a fair investigation into the North Lakhimpur case and the subsequent death of Sub-Inspector Junmoni Rabha, the investigation has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam.

This decision aims to ensure an unbiased and comprehensive inquiry into the matter, as stated by the Director General of Police in a tweet.

Following a post-mortem examination at Nagaon Civil Hospital, Junmoni Rabha’s body was cremated in Guwahati.

Although Junmoni Rabha gained recognition for her firm stance against criminals, she also faced controversies related to alleged financial irregularities. Last year, she was arrested on charges
