woman heavy rainfall

Agartala, July 06: In a devastating incident caused by heavy rainfall, a 58-year-old woman lost her life when the mud wall of her house collapsed while she was asleep in Tripura’s Khowai district. The unfortunate event occurred on Wednesday, leaving the community in shock and raising concerns about infrastructure safety during adverse weather conditions.

The victim, identified as Sabitri Sarkar from Ghilatali village in the Kalyanpur area of the Khowai district, tragically succumbed to her injuries caused by the collapsed wall. Her husband, Murari, discovered the collapse after hearing a loud noise around 3 am. He managed to rescue his wife from the debris and rushed her to a nearby hospital, but despite medical treatment, she could not be saved.

Following the incident, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) initiated an inquiry based on a preliminary report from the additional district magistrate in Khowai. The local authorities are determined to investigate the cause of the wall collapse and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Jirania subdivision in west Tripura experienced significant damage to multiple houses due to the heavy rainfall. Immediate compensation of Rs 30,000 was provided to nine individuals whose homes were affected by the calamity, aiming to offer support and relief to those affected by the disaster.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated one. The SEOC report reveals that Tripura has witnessed three fatalities in the past five days alone. These incidents highlight the vulnerability of the state’s infrastructure and the urgent need for proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents during adverse weather conditions.

In a separate incident on July 2, a mudslide triggered by relentless rain in a village of Gomati district claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl, while a five-year-old girl sustained injuries. Additionally, lightning strikes in June resulted in the loss of two lives, including a pregnant woman, and caused injuries to several others.

The local authorities and community leaders have expressed their condolences to Sabitri Sarkar’s family, providing assurance of government support during this challenging time. It is crucial for the government to not only provide immediate relief but also invest in long-term solutions, such as improving infrastructure and implementing better disaster management strategies, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the monsoon season continues, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Adequate awareness campaigns and community preparedness programs can play a significant role in minimizing the risks associated with natural disasters and mitigating their impact on vulnerable communities.

The tragic loss of Sabitri Sarkar serves as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive measures to strengthen infrastructure, enhance disaster preparedness, and prioritize the safety and well-being of residents in Tripura.
