Agartala, Feb 19: Artists from four countries are set to participate in the inaugural three-day Tripura International Puppet Festival, starting on February 26, according to Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee puppeteer Prabhitangshu Das.

The festival aims to commemorate 50 years of Tripura puppet theatre, with renowned puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, among the distinguished guests.

The globally acclaimed Ishara Puppet Theater Trust, under Pudumjee’s direction, will grace the event with its performance, marking a significant milestone for the festival.

Named “TIPU” (Tripura International Puppet Utsav 2024), the festival will also feature puppeteers from the USA, Brazil, Bangladesh, and various parts of India, showcasing their unique art forms.

The festival’s opening day will feature the renowned “Rani Laxmi Bai” show by the artists of Tripura Puppet Theater, alongside Lara William’s “Penguin in My Pocket” and performances by local artists.

Additionally, puppeteers from West Bengal, Dhaka Puppet Theater, and traditional puppet groups from Rajasthan will take the stage in subsequent phases.

The festival promises a diverse range of puppetry styles, including rod puppets, string puppets, and shadow puppets, providing a blend of modern and traditional techniques.

It offers a valuable learning opportunity for budding puppeteers, allowing them to witness legends in action and learn from their experiences.

In addition to the performances, a special seminar will be organized to discuss the role of puppetry as a tool for learning in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The seminar aims to highlight the significance of performing arts in a world increasingly influenced by AI, emphasizing the enduring relevance of traditional art forms.
