Nagaland Christians

Kohima, July 06: In the midst of mounting opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Nagaland and other parts of Northeast India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reportedly assured the state government that the UCC will not disrupt the lives of Christians and tribals.

During a meeting in Delhi, Shah conveyed this assurance to a delegation led by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, which included Deputy Chief Ministers Yanthungo Patton and TR Zeliang, cabinet ministers, a Rajya Sabha MP, and the state Assembly speaker.

A top source within the state government confirmed that Amit Shah had stated, “Uniform Civil Code will not disturb Christians and tribals,” adding that the meeting between the state government delegation and the Union Home Minister was productive. Nagaland is a land predominantly inhabited by tribals and has a Christian majority. Additionally, Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution provides special provisions for the state.

The repeated assurances by Amit Shah that Christians and tribals will not be impacted by the UCC have reportedly alleviated the concerns of the Nagaland government regarding its potential ramifications.
