Guwahati, Dec 21: The anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-Independent) has strongly criticized the Assam Police, accusing them of arbitrarily detaining innocent youths in connection with recent grenade blasts carried out by the outfit in the state.

In a public letter, ULFA-I asserted that Assam Police had detained youths from various parts of Assam, including Guwahati, under suspicion of being involved in the recent military operations conducted by the outfit.

ULFA-I contends that the arrested individuals have no connection whatsoever with the group or any military operations carried out by them in recent times. According to the outfit, the Assam Police’s actions are an attempt to cover up their guilt and failures, and they condemn such acts.

Two grenade blasts occurred in Assam in the past weeks, with the first on November 22 in the Tinsukia district and the second on December 9 near the Jaisagar CRPF camp in Sivsagar district.

Initially, the police suspected ULFA-I’s involvement in the first blast, where unidentified individuals on a motorcycle reportedly hurled a grenade near an army camp. ULFA-I claimed responsibility only after the second blast.

Fortunately, the December 9 attack resulted in no reported injuries. These incidents have revived memories of Assam’s insurgency in the 1990s.

Despite the Union home ministry’s claim that the insurgency in Assam is under control, leading to the removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in some areas, the districts affected by these recent attacks remain under the Act.

ULFA-I accuses Assam Police of using arbitrary detentions to divert attention from their shortcomings and errors in handling the situation, condemning such actions as reprehensible.
