Vice President

Guwahati, May 03: Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is currently serving as the Vice President of India, conferred the D. Sc. and D.Litt. degrees (Honoris Causa) to eminent personalities of Assam and awarded degrees to students at the 21st Convocation Ceremony of Dibrugarh University on Wednesday.

He emphasized that the contribution and participation of the eight Northeastern states in India are crucial for the country’s overall development and progress.

He said, “The eight states of the Northeastern region are true ‘Ashta Lakshmis’ of India; without their growth, involvement, participation, and contribution, Bharat will remain incomplete.”

Additionally, the Vice President of India stated that Dibrugarh, the stunning cultural and commercial hub of Assam has given birth to several prominent intellectual, cultural, literary, and public figures, including his respected colleagues in the Rajya Sabha – Ranjan Gogoi, former Chief Justice of India, and Sarbananda Sonowal, whose graceful and refined mannerisms truly reflect the rich culture of the Northeast.

“This year, we had the occasion for the conferment of Padma Award to the people from this area, Hemoprova Chutia, Hem Chandra Goswami, and Ramkuiwangbe Jene, who were honoured with Padma Awards for their contributions this year,” said VP Dhankhar.

“There was a time when Padma awards were given in two categories: one by patronage and second by distinction. In the last few years, the system has changed. Padma awards are now conferred only to deserving people, and the moment they are declared, everyone is delighted that the right person has been conferred the award. Many congratulations to them. When I am in this part of our country, I recall with great pride the heroic valour of King Prithu Jalapeshwer of Kamrup who defeated Bakhtiyar Khilji, the destroyer of Nalanda University and also we recall with pride and honour the legendary Ahom warrior Lachit Borphukan who defeated Mughal armies in the famous Battle of Saraighat.” said VP Dhankhar.
