Bhubaneswar, Feb 09: VK Pandian, a close aide to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, shed light on the strong rapport between Patnaik and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attributing it to their shared commitment to federalism and respect for the people’s mandate.

Despite being political rivals, Pandian emphasized that Patnaik and Modi have maintained a cordial relationship since 2011, driven by mutual values such as respecting the electoral mandate and upholding federal principles.

Pandian addressed the perception of a partnership between Patnaik’s BJD and the BJP, refuting claims by the Congress that the BJD supports the BJP’s agenda in Parliament. He highlighted Patnaik’s stance on contesting elections independently and maintaining neutrality in national politics.

Discussing the dynamics between Modi and Patnaik, Pandian highlighted their mutual respect for the people’s mandate and their commitment to federalism. He recounted instances where they stood united against central policies that encroached upon states’ jurisdiction, emphasizing their shared vision for the country’s larger interests.

In 2023, Patnaik reiterated the BJD’s decision to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections independently, reaffirming the party’s longstanding stance of staying clear of alliances.

Despite overtures from other regional parties, Patnaik declined offers to join opposition alliances, underscoring his party’s autonomy and anti-Congress stance.

Since assuming office in 2000, Patnaik has led Odisha with a focus on state development and neutrality in national politics.

The BJD has occasionally aligned with the BJP in Parliament, reflecting Patnaik’s pragmatic approach to governance and strategic partnerships.
