3. Concerns raised about a resolution by the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on January 21, 2024.

Imphal, Jan 24: In a formal communication to Union Minister Amit Shah, 10 MLAs from the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi-Hmar community in Manipur have urged the re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the valley.

The MLAs raised concerns about a resolution adopted by the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on January 21, 2024.

They criticized the resolution as one-sided and argued that it undermined the ongoing political discourse between the Suspension of Operation (SoO) Group and the State and Central Government.

According to the MLAs, this decision was an attempt to tarnish the image of the SoO groups.

The letter specifically pointed out the presence and reinforcement of Meitei personnel within the State Commando Forces in the Kuki Zo border town of Moreh.

The MLAs alleged that suspected Meitei militias embedded among the commando units were responsible for the violence in Moreh.

They recommended that peace and tranquility could be restored by withdrawing all Meitei personnel from the State Forces in Moreh and deploying Tribal Police Officers and Personnel, similar to the arrangements in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi Districts.

The MLAs emphasized the ongoing issues, including the looting of arms and persistent violence.

To address these concerns, they proposed giving the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army full powers to recover the looted arms from the State Police and IRB.

The suggested approach involved re-introducing AFSPA in the Manipur valley.

This letter reflects the MLAs’ plea to address the complex security situation in Manipur by reinstating AFSPA in the valley, citing ongoing violence and the need for enhanced powers to recover looted arms.
