Kolkata, Jan 10: In a case involving the theft of 1500 iPhones worth Rs 9.7 crore from a moving truck in West Bengal’s Medinipur district last September, the Kolkata High Court has ordered a probe after the transport company alleged inadequate police action.
The transport company, dissatisfied with the progress of the investigation, sought a CID inquiry instead of relying on the district police. The West Bengal police claimed that some stolen iPhones had been traced in New Delhi and were functional, assuring an ongoing investigation.
After hearing both sides, the Kolkata High Court mandated an unbiased investigation supervised by the West Medinipur district’s superintendent of police. Justice Joy Sengupta requested a progress report from the police for the next hearing.

The incident occurred on September 28, 2023, in the Debra Police Station area.
The petitioner claimed the iPhones, en route from Chennai to Kolkata, disappeared upon reaching Debra. The transport company, using a GPS, reported that the truck was stationary for over 30 minutes at a petrol pump in Debra, suggesting a potential theft while in motion.
Efforts to contact the truck driver failed, and upon police arrival, the truck was found empty. The petitioner accused the police of delayed action in filing the FIR, which was eventually lodged on October 10, 2023, with no arrests made.
The High Court ordered the district police to conduct a comprehensive inquiry, with a progress report required by the next hearing on February 2, 2024.
