New Delhi, March 16: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, set to take place from April 19 to June 1, spanning across seven phases.

The results of the elections will be declared on June 4, marking a significant event in the country’s democratic process.

Poll Schedule

  • The first phase of voting will occur on April 19, followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

Assembly Elections

  • Alongside the Lok Sabha polls, Assembly elections will also be held in four states: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.
  • Andhra Pradesh will vote on May 13, while Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will conduct their elections on April 19.
  • Odisha will hold voting in two phases, on May 13 and May 20.

Bypolls

  • Bypolls for 26 Assembly seats will coincide with the Lok Sabha elections, adding to the electoral activity across the country.

Voter Eligibility and Polling Stations

  • Nearly 96.8 crore individuals are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming polls, facilitated by over 12 lakh polling stations across the nation.

Previous Election Highlights

  • In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, winning 303 out of 542 contested seats.
  • Conversely, the Indian National Congress faced another defeat, securing only 52 seats and forming part of the INDIA opposition bloc.

State-wise Performance

  • Regional parties played a crucial role in various states. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress retained dominance in West Bengal, securing 22 out of 42 seats, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) made substantial gains in Tamil Nadu with 23 out of 38 seats.
  • In Andhra Pradesh, the YSR Congress secured a landslide victory with 151 Assembly seats, while in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal continued its winning streak by securing 117 out of 146 assembly seats.
  • Sikkim witnessed a political shift as the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha emerged victorious with 17 seats, dethroning the long-standing Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). Similarly, in Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP and its allies secured a majority with 41 out of 60 seats.
