Guwahati, Feb 25: In the wake of the Assam Government’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages & Divorces Registration Act, 1935, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika has called for mature and responsible action from Muslim leaders.
Waris Pathan, AIMIM leader, criticized the move, alleging that the BJP government’s actions are anti-Muslim and violate constitutional rights.
He accused the government of attempting to polarize the state ahead of elections by introducing laws targeting Muslim practices.
Responding to Pathan’s remarks, Minister Hazarika questioned the characterization of repealing an 89-year-old law allowing marriages between minor girls and adult males as anti-Muslim.

He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of daughters over outdated social norms.
