Kolkata, Feb 11: Amid ongoing speculation about internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, asserted that there were no such factions within the ruling party in West Bengal.

Addressing rumors of discord between him and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek clarified, “There are no factions in the TMC. Differences in our approach do not imply personal or political disagreements with Mamata Banerjee.”

The rumors of internal rifts surfaced amid observations that Abhishek Banerjee had repeatedly raised the issue of age at party meetings over the past two years, leading to cautious responses from his supporters and veteran party members.

Speculation intensified earlier this month when Abhishek, TMC MP, was notably absent from the platform where Mamata led a 48-hour sit-in protest against the Centre, demanding the release of MGNREGA funds.

In January, Abhishek had affirmed that there were no rifts between older and younger leaders within the TMC. However, he reiterated that younger members tended to work more due to their natural advantage of age.

Reacting to the developments, Samit Bhattacharya, the spokesperson for the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, dismissed the internal discourse within the TMC, asserting that neither the people of the state nor the BJP were interested in such statements.

Bhattacharya emphasized that the people of West Bengal were focused on ousting the TMC from power, indicating the party’s declining popularity in the region.
