New Delhi, May 05: Air India has adjusted its complimentary cabin baggage allowance for the lowest economy fare segment on domestic flights, reducing it from 20kg to 15kg.
This change is part of the fare families concept introduced by the Tata Group-owned airline last August, aiming to provide more tailored options for passengers.
Previously, Air India’s domestic passengers enjoyed a 25kg cabin baggage allowance, but now, in line with other carriers like IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet, the allowance stands at 15kg.
The fare families—Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex—offer varying benefits and fare restrictions at different price points, according to an Air India spokesperson.

Effective May 2, both the ‘Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ fare categories now offer a 15kg baggage allowance, while ‘Flex’ maintains its 25kg allowance.
For Business Class passengers on domestic routes, the baggage allowance ranges from 25kg to 35kg. International flights have different baggage allowances depending on the destination.
The airline emphasizes that fare families enable passengers to select fares and services that align with their preferences and requirements.
The pricing structure ensures flexibility, with ‘Flex’ fares offering additional benefits such as extra baggage allowance and flexibility in changes or cancellations, albeit at a higher price point.
According to Air India, the price difference between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ fares on routes like Delhi-Mumbai is typically around ₹1,000, with the latter providing added value worth nearly ₹9,000, inclusive of 10kg extra baggage and no change or cancellation fees.
The introduction of fare families follows extensive customer feedback and a thorough study by Air India, benchmarked against competitors’ offerings in relevant markets.
This move underscores the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience and providing more personalized travel options.
