Aizawl, Feb 23: Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), all 728 villages in Mizoram have achieved the milestone of being connected with tap water, marking a significant stride towards ensuring access to safe drinking water for rural communities.

The JJM, a flagship initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, aims to provide individual household tap connections to every rural household by 2024, thereby addressing the critical need for safe and reliable drinking water across the country.

According to Public Health Engineering Minister Prof Lalnilawma, all 728 villages in Mizoram have been encompassed within the ambit of the central scheme.

Among these, 621 villages have fully implemented the JJM, while the remaining 107 villages have witnessed partial implementation.

Efforts are underway to expedite the provision of tap water connections to every household in the 107 partially covered villages by March, aligning with the timeline set forth by the JJM for its completion.

Despite these achievements, challenges persist, particularly in urban areas like Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram. Lalnilawma highlighted the inadequacy of water supply in meeting the needs of Aizawl’s population, which stands at 3.78 lakh.

Aizawl’s demand for water, estimated at 66.42 million litres per day, surpasses the current supply capacity, which stands at 28.77 million litres per day.

This underscores the pressing need for further infrastructure development and investment to bridge the gap between demand and supply and ensure sufficient access to clean water for urban residents.

While Mizoram celebrates the successful implementation of the JJM in its rural areas, concerted efforts are required to address water scarcity challenges in urban centers like Aizawl, thereby ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water for all residents across the state.
