Imphal, March 21: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh recently honored mixed martial artist Chungreng Koren, lauding him as a symbol of pride for the state.

Koren’s recent triumph as the Interim Bantamweight Champion at Matrix Fight Night (MFN) 14 earned him accolades, with CM Biren Singh praising his achievements in the ring.

In a ceremony celebrating Koren’s success, CM Biren Singh commended the fighter for bringing glory to Manipur through his remarkable performance in mixed martial arts (MMA).

The felicitation took place against a backdrop of ongoing unrest in the state, with ethnic tensions escalating in recent months.

Koren’s victory carries significant weight as he dedicated his championship belt to Manipur, expressing concern over the prevailing violence.

He seized the opportunity to appeal directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging intervention to restore peace in the region.

Additionally, he extended a heartfelt invitation for the Prime Minister to visit Manipur and witness the situation firsthand.

In an emotional plea captured in an undated video following a bout at MFN, Koren emphasized the urgent need for peace restoration in Manipur.

He shed light on the severe consequences of prolonged violence, including shortages of food and water in relief camps and disruptions to education.

The unrest in Manipur has persisted since May last year, resulting in numerous casualties and displacing tens of thousands. Authorities warn of a worsening situation, with underground militant groups gaining traction amid escalating ethnic tensions.

The recent violence stemmed from a “Tribal Solidarity March” in hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This clash of interests has exacerbated existing tensions, plunging Manipur into turmoil.

Despite the challenges, Chungreng Koren’s victory and his impassioned plea for peace serve as a ray of hope amidst adversity. As Manipur grapples with unrest, his call for intervention underscores the urgency for swift action to restore stability and harmony in the state.
