India-Myanmar border

1. Amit Shah announces plan to fence the India-Myanmar border, mirroring the approach on the Bangladesh border.
2. The move signals the end of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) allowing border residents to travel without visas.
3. The decision aims to enhance border security and control unauthorized entry into India.

Guwahati, Jan 20: Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the Centre plans to fence the India-Myanmar border, similar to the barricades set up along the Bangladesh border, to restrict unauthorized entry into the country.

This decision implies an end to the Free Movement Regime (FMR) that currently permits individuals living near the India-Myanmar border to travel 16 km into each other’s territory without requiring a visa.

During the passing out parade of Assam Police commandos in Guwahati, Shah stated, “India’s border with Myanmar will soon be protected like the border with Bangladesh.”

He conveyed the government’s reconsideration of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) agreement with Myanmar, signaling an impending termination of free movement into India from Myanmar.

India shares a 1,643-km-long border with Myanmar, traversing states like Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, all of which currently operate under the Free Movement Regime (FMR) established in 2018 as part of India’s Act East policy.

Shah’s announcement follows India’s recent communication of security concerns to Myanmar, emphasizing challenges along the border, including the influx of refugees from Myanmar.

Amit Shah criticized the previous Congress regime in his address, alleging bribery for government jobs during its tenure. He asserted that no bribes are necessary for employment under the BJP rule.

Shah also spoke about the upcoming consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, stating that Lord Ram would return home after 550 “disrespectful” years.

He expressed pride in the event, highlighting that the ‘pran pratishthan’ ceremony aligns with India’s trajectory toward becoming a superpower.
