Itanagar, Aug 02: A devastating fire broke out in Pareng village, Siang district, on Wednesday night, destroying 24 homes and partially damaging seven others.

The blaze, which started around 8:40 pm, also affected four huts and left two people injured, though there were no major casualties, according to District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) Obang Apum.

The Aalo fire brigade managed to extinguish the flames. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Opir Paron, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tajing Jonnom, and District Medical Officer Tarik Talom arrived to assess the damage and assist residents.

The fire is believed to have started from unattended pork roasting over an open flame. The lack of fire stations in the Siang district exacerbated the situation, highlighting the urgent need for improved fire-fighting infrastructure.
