Itanagar, Nov 05: Arunachal Pradesh’s new Greenfield Donyi Polo airport, which is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month, will showcase a unique architectural marvel that is a prime example of a well-designed, sustainable and eco-friendly structure.

The airport’s massive gate, made entirely out of bamboo and cane, is India’s most significant public structure made out of naturally-available materials.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu acknowledges “Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the long pending dream of people of #ArunachalPradesh a reality. The naming of greenfield airport as ‘Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar’ is an act of great respect to our rich cultural heritage. Gratitude Hon PM.”

On Wednesday, The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the naming of Greenfield Airport at Hollongi, Itanagar as “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar”.

The resolution was passed by the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh to name the airport ‘Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar’, which reflects the people’s reverence of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) to symbolize the traditions and rich cultural heritage of the State.

The government of India granted ‘In-principle’ approval for the development of Hollongi Greenfield Airport in January 2019. The project is being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) with the help of the Central Government and the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh at the cost of Rs. 646 crores.
