Itanagar, Dec 03: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced a substantial financial incentive for athletes from the state who achieve success at the Olympic Games. The incentive program allocates Rs 5 crore for gold medalists, Rs 3 crore for silver medalists, and Rs 2 crore for bronze medalists.

Khandu expressed that this initiative aims to encourage and support athletes, showcasing the government’s commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture in the state.

Speaking at the 11th Greater Kameng Badminton Championship-2023 inaugural ceremony in Seijosa, Pakke Kessang district, Khandu highlighted the positive impact of proactive sports policies implemented by both the central and state governments. He credited these measures for significant advancements in sports at both the national and state levels.

Khandu emphasized the transformation in India’s sports scenario, noting that the country now ranks higher in global sports competitions. He praised the achievements of Arunachal Pradesh in sports, highlighting its third-place ranking in the Northeast after Manipur and Assam.

Reiterating the state government’s commitment to sports, Khandu shared an example where three Wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh, despite being denied visas by China for the Asian Games, were officially recognized by the state government as part of India’s contingent. They were awarded a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh each as per the state sports policy.

The chief minister expressed optimism about the state’s athletes participating in the next Asian Games in Japan, assuring them of the government’s support in training and selection.

During the championship’s opening, Khandu commended the athletes for showcasing camaraderie and sportsmanship. He highlighted the role of sports in fostering unity and brotherhood. The Greater Kameng Badminton Championship is an annual event organized by the Greater Kameng Badminton Association, aiming to promote sportsmanship and unity in the undivided Kameng region.

Khandu also announced the creation of a new district, Bichom, shortly and expressed hope for continued support for the annual badminton championship, signalling the development of a badminton academy with international standard courts on donated land near the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy at Chimpu, Itanagar.
