Itanagar, Nov 04: The 2022 edition of the Tawang festival, which is held in Arunachal Pradesh every year, has been cancelled.

The Tawang festival has been cancelled this year as a mark of respect to MLA Jambey Tashi, who died on November 2 in Guwahati.

The three-day Tawang festival was slated to start on November 4.

Tawang festival, which is held in Arunachal Pradesh every year, is one of the much-visited and awaited festivals in the Northeast.

In 2012, the Tawang festival was held for the first time.

Notably, Arunachal Pradesh MLA Jambey Tashi was a patron of the Tawang festival.

BJP MLA from Lumla constituency in Arunachal Pradesh – Jambey Tashi breathed his last at Down Town Hospital in Guwahati, Assam in the wee hours of Wednesday.

He was 48 years old.

Notably, Jambey Tashi also happens to be a cousin of Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu.

Jambey Tashi was a BJP MLA from Lumla constituency of the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The 44-year-old Tashi was also a Member of the National Minority Morcha, BJP. He had previously been a member of the Indian National Congress and People’s Party of Arunachal.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu shared the news on Twitter and wrote, “Demise of brother Shri Jambey Tashi ji, Hon MLA of Lumla Assembly Constituency is a huge personal loss to me and I am so deeply pained at this tragedy. I join the family in my prayers for the departed. Dear Brother, may you attain supreme bliss of Nirvana. Om Mani Padme Hum.”

In 2009, he was elected unopposed from the 1-Lumla S/T Assembly constituency on a Congress ticket. In the 2014 election for the 1-Lumla Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh, he defeated independent candidate Theg Tse Rinpoche, on a Congress ticket, by 1499 votes.

In the 2019 Legislative Assembly elections, he rode on a BJP ticket and defeated Jampa Thrinly Kunkhap of NPP by 1288 votes. Jambey Tashi garnered 4567 votes while Jampa Thrinly Kunkhap got 3279 votes.
