New Delhi, Feb 17: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal emerged victorious in the trust vote held in the Delhi Assembly on Saturday, issuing a bold challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Kejriwal affirmed that despite the BJP potentially winning this year’s Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would overthrow the saffron party’s rule in the 2029 elections.

Asserting his government’s majority in the House, Kejriwal explained that the motion of confidence was necessary due to alleged attempts by the BJP to poach AAP MLAs and destabilize his government.

During the voice vote, the motion of confidence was passed, with 54 out of 62 AAP MLAs present. Kejriwal refuted claims of any defections within the AAP ranks, attributing the absence of some MLAs to various reasons such as imprisonment, illness, or travel.

Kejriwal revealed that several MLAs had reported attempts by BJP representatives to lure them with financial inducements, emphasizing that the BJP’s tactics aimed to weaken the AAP.

He criticized the BJP’s alleged control over the Services department and bureaucracy, accusing them of obstructing his government’s initiatives, including essential healthcare services.

Kejriwal recounted past instances of physical attacks against him and voiced concerns about possible arrests, highlighting the resilience of his political ideology against such adversities.

The motion of confidence, initiated by Kejriwal, underscored the AAP’s allegations of BJP’s attempts to destabilize the Delhi government through unethical means.

This trust vote marks the third such instance during Kejriwal’s tenure, with previous motions occurring in August 2022 and March 2023 amidst similar allegations of BJP’s “Operation Lotus” to lure AAP MLAs.

With a commanding majority of 62 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, the AAP remains a dominant force, while the BJP, with eight MLAs, continues to face challenges, including suspensions of seven of its members.
