Guwahati, July 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the construction of the world’s tallest statue of Bir Lachit Barphukan in Jorhat’s Hollongapar. The monumental project is expected to be completed by 2024, marking a historic milestone for the state.

The statue, standing at an impressive height of approximately 125 feet, will be a testament to the valor and bravery of Bir Lachit Barphukan, a legendary Ahom general who played a pivotal role in the historic Battle of Saraighat against the Mughals in 1671. The statue aims to honor his significant contributions to Assam’s history and serve as an inspiration for future generations.

The ambitious project comes with an estimated cost of about 120 crore rupees, as stated by the Chief Minister in a tweet. The funding for this grand endeavor will be allocated by the state government to ensure its successful completion. The project’s budget reflects the importance and reverence with which Bir Lachit Barphukan is regarded in Assamese culture and history.

To facilitate the construction of this monumental statue, the government has acquired approximately 50 bighas of land from the general public. However, it is important to note that only about 12% of the project’s construction has been completed thus far, with the remaining work expected to be finalized by January 2024.
