Manipur Governor

Imphal, July 11: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey made a recent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to arrange a meeting with community leaders in the conflict-affected state. The objective of the meeting would be to find a “durable solution” and restore peace in Manipur.

During her visit to relief camps in Kangpokpi, predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community, and in Imphal East, predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community, Governor Uikey expressed her condemnation of all forms of violence. She urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the government in their efforts to bring peace to Manipur, which has been grappling with unrest for more than two months. The Governor also distributed blankets to the families in the camps as a gesture of support.

“We are making every possible effort to resolve the issue,” the Governor assured the camp inmates. “Security forces are being deployed in vulnerable areas, and temporary housing is being provided in different locations for the displaced people. Adequate compensation will be provided to those affected.” Governor Uikey had previously met Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi last month.

The Governor’s appeal to the Prime Minister for a meeting with community leaders holds great significance, particularly because opposition parties and various organizations in Manipur have questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the situation. A group of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Manipur also visited New Delhi to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister but were unsuccessful.

Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur between May 29 and June 1, where he held meetings with leaders of different organizations and announced several measures. However, sporadic incidents of violence have continued, leading many in Manipur to call for Prime Minister Modi’s intervention to put an end to the violence.

In a submission to the Supreme Court, the Manipur government informed that 142 people have lost their lives and around 5,000 incidents of arson have been reported since May 3. The state government had previously stated that over 60,000 individuals have been displaced due to the violence and are currently seeking shelter in more than 350 relief camps. Additionally, nearly 12,000 people have fled to neighboring Mizoram in the wake of the riots that erupted on May 3.

The appeal made by Governor Anusuiya Uikey underscores the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflicts in Manipur. It highlights the need for the involvement of community leaders and the Prime Minister’s intervention to restore stability and bring lasting peace to the state. The situation in Manipur demands collective efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders to address the grievances and concerns of the people, paving the way for a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.
